You Can't Taste Without the Sense of Smell

Did you know that you need your sense of smell in order to taste things? A taste is one of our five senses. Our taste buds can recognize four basic types of tastes. These are sweet, sour, salt and bitter, and the tastes that we experience in food are combinations of these simple tastes.

SEE FOR YOURSELF

Blindfold yourself, pinch your nostrils together and get a friend to put a small  pieces of various foods on your tongue. You will be unable to tell the difference between raw potato and apple, or between coffee and tea. This is because you also need your sense of smell in order to taste things.
