The Largest Spider in the World

Did you know that the Giant Huntsman Spider is considered as the largest spider in the world by leg span? While the Goliath Birdeater spider is the largest spider by mass and second largest by leg span?

Giant Huntsman was discovered in northern Laos in 2001. Probably a cave dweller because of its pale colour, long legs and special hairs. It is also the largest member of the Sparassidae family with a 30 centimeter (12 inch) leg span, and 4.6 centimeter (1.8 inches) body length.

Goliath Birdeater is belonging to the Tarantula family. These spiders can weigh over 170 g (6.0 oz) and can have a leg span of up to 30 cm (12 in). Like all tarantulas, they have fangs and carry venom in their fangs. But their venom is relatively harmless and its effects are comparable of a wasp’s sting.
